“On a Journey for Families: Lessons Learned from Colleges Investing in Student Parents” offers insights and takeaways from our 2021-2023 FamilyU Cohort, an offering in our technical assistance program. The report outlines how the FamilyU Cohort enhanced student parent work at each of the four participating institutions, impacting approximately 25,000 student parents across their campuses.

“The Child Care Barrier: The Impacts of Inaccessible and Costly Child Care for Student Parents” explores the complicated waters student parents navigate in order to pursue higher education while simultaneously caring for themselves and their families. Our findings clearly demonstrate the unaddressed caregiving needs and important experiences of student parents, especially those in the D.C. region.

Higher Together: The Impact of a College Degree for Young Parents

This report shares the post-college experiences of Generation Hope’s alumni, who were all teen parents working toward their Associate’s and Bachelor’s degrees. Generation Hope alumni were a part of the larger student parent population that makes up 1 in 5 undergraduate college students nationwide. The organization’s Scholar Program has helped teen parents complete college by providing direct support, such as mentoring, tuition assistance, a peer community, and other vital services, addressing their immediate and long-term needs.

Next Generation Academy Impact Report

In 2018 Generation Hope launched our early childhood program pilot, Next Generation Academy, to further cement our commitment to being a two-generation model for young families to experience economic mobility. This report aims to help community, education, and philanthropic leaders further understand Next Generation Academy services, our lessons learned, and the outcomes produced over the last three years.

Higher Education and Student Parent Supports: Barriers, Challenges, and Opportunities

This report presents the findings from four focus group sessions held with student parents, philanthropy, and higher education representatives, including college presidents, professors, and administrative staff, from across the United States. These conversations helped to inform the programming and supports provided by Generation Hope’s new technical assistance program called FamilyU, which includes a two-year cohort for higher education institutions to enhance their student parent work. The report identifies the top three barriers to student parent success in college from the perspectives of both higher education leaders and student parents themselves.
