Maddie Hren
Scholar Recruitment Coordinator

Madeline Hren (she/her) graduated from Boston University with a B.A. in Sociology, a B.A. in International Relations, and a minor in Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. Madeline found her passion for youth development while interning for MEDIAGIRLS, a Boston-area nonprofit that teaches middle school girls to analyze media and advocate for stricter laws surrounding beauty and diet advertisements for youth. Prior to joining Generation Hope, she worked as a Program Coordinator at Spark the Journey, a mentorship program in the D.C. area that serves low-income, first-generation students in the academic middle and supports them through the college application process and beyond.

Madeline served as a Youth Development Volunteer with the Peace Corps in San Bartolo Aguas Calientes, Guatemala and continues to visit her host family and friends in Guate every year. She believes in the power of education, but also in the need to improve the education system in the United States and to dismantle systemic barriers facing millions of youth across the country. Outside of work she loves taking Zumba classes, seeing musicals and concerts throughout the DMV, and singing loudly in her bedroom, to the chagrin of her roommates and her betta fish, Darth Betta.

Quote:

“What I treasure most in life is being able to dream. During my most difficult moments and complex situations I have been able to dream of a more beautiful future.” — Rigoberta Menchú Tum

Why I chose this quote:

As a perpetual optimist and daydreamer, I believe strongly in the power of positive thinking and imagination. However, I also know that my privilege has allowed me to accomplish my goals without facing many systemic barriers and life obstacles. My biggest goal in life is to continue to dismantle these barriers for youth across the world, and to allow every student to dream bigger and take meaningful steps towards accomplishing their goals.
